Resist the Seduction of Mediocrity

Happy Monday,

When do we stop pushing? When do we stop trying to grow and improving ourselves? The answer is never. But doesn’t this lead to constant stress and unhappiness?

For some the answer is yes and that is because you are confusing the constant and never ending improvement mind set with a lack of contentment and happiness.

We can be working to grow and still enjoy abundant happiness. This occurs when we are grateful with all the circumstances that life is providing us with. We can be in a state of growth and happiness while understanding that the journey is the blessing. The joy that life has to offer is in the experiences, irregardless of the judgment we attach to it.

This is why it is almost sinful to accept mediocrity as a place of residence. Being good enough is not fulfilling our God given talents, what a waste. I believe we have an obligation to contribute our very best to society. To become the best version of ourselves. What do we gain by playing small? Certainly not satisfaction or increased self-esteem or self-confidence. We also must be an example for all those who we influence. To be a source of inspiration. We owe that to our kids and the next generation.

Be grateful for all that you have and all that is yet to come while you never stop improving yourself. Never accept mediocrity in your life. You deserve so much more. You were designed by God to for greatness. Embrace your greatness within.

Have an abundant and inspired week,

Playing Small is a Waste!

Playing Small is a Waste

Happy Monday,

I was recently thinking about the goals I set for 2015. I am proud to say that I am on track to hit them all. I’m telling you this not to brag but to confess that perhaps I am playing it to small or to safe.

There is nothing wrong with hitting your goals. Lord knows I speak and write frequently on the subject. But I think there are times we play too small. We do so because we like comfort. As humans we are creatures of comfort. We do not want to be stretched to much because it will make us uncomfortable and that makes us nervous and fearful. Unfortunately to achieve anything truly worth while, we must push ourselves beyond our comfort zone.

The price we pay for playing it safe is a life in which we do ok, but we never reach the greatness we all have within.  The universe is an abundant place with abundant opportunities and infinite potential. The limitations we put upon our thoughts and actions results in small rewards. To think and dream big requires us to push the boundaries of our thoughts. To be willing to challenge our status quo and to set loftier goals. The cool thing is, when you step outside the zone of comfort in thought and action and dare to dream big, the rewards are significant.

So I ask you (and me) if dreaming big requires the same energy as dreaming small, why would we ever dream small?

As we begin 2016 and we are setting our goals, so lets push each other to set big goals this year. Lets think abundantly and dare to be great. The universe is waiting to reward us for stepping up and claiming the greatness within.  “It is better to dream big and miss our goals then to think small and hit them.” Marcus Aurelius

Have an abundant and inspired week,

It’s all about purpose.

Happy Monday,

Well it is week two of the New Year. How are you doing thus far? Are you reviewing your goals and executing your plan? Many of you are probably rolling your eyes at the process, thinking not another year of making lofty goals only to fall short.

So why is that? Well, there are many reasons but I would like to focus on one in particular and perhaps the most important, a lack of a clearly defined purpose. I can hear the groaning already. Not more about purpose? Yes, its all about purpose. The truth be told, numbers and goals specifically do not drive people. It is your purpose that drives you to achieve your goals.

A recent West Point study showed that those who had intrinsic goals, “I want to serve my country and make a difference” outperformed those with extrinsic goals, “I want to rise in the ranks and become an officer because it is prestigious.”

Goals may motivate you in the short term but they will not sustain you over time. Without a good or great reason to keep moving forward during challenges you either quit or go through the motions which eventually will result in another year of frustration and unaccomplished goals.

Please understand that this does not mean you shouldn’t measure your goals. I tell docs and their teams all the time that goals are a way to measure if you are living your purpose. When you see your patients as numbers and not as people, you are off purpose. Once your goals have been defined it is your purpose that drives you to achieving them. The greater your purpose the greater the performance.

Before you start defining your 2016 goals, define or redefine your purpose. Share it with your team and create a cross accountability. Purpose driven goals transcend any extrinsic motivator and will help you overcome any obstacle while enhancing performance that will far exceed any numbered goals.

Dr. Jay LaGuardia discusses “A Leap of Faith”

Are you one of those people who need certainty before taking action? Don’t feel bad. Many people fall into this category. Before we take action, we want to be sure that everything will work out.

As we all know, there are no certainties in life except death and taxes. Certainty is an illusion. Taking action requires courage or a leap of faith. Not everything will work out. So what? My Nana (Italian Grandmother) always told me, “What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger.” I have used this as motivation when I am wavering on a decision.

Failure doesn’t occur when we take action, failure occurs with inaction. There are only lessons to be learned, distinctions to be made, and personal growth to be realized.

We feel fully alive when we take a “leap of faith.”  It’s life’s greatest excitement, our greatest adventures. Don’t miss out. Jump without a chute. Trust that the experience will bring you benefit regardless of the outcome. What have you avoided doing? Take a leap of faith. Embrace the journey and live your life to the fullest.

Dr. Jay LaGuardia on Right or Wrong…

blog-1
Avoid adding spice to hot discussions.
Have you ever been in an argument? Of course you have. When you find yourself caught up in a discussion about a topic you are passion about (knowing you are right), it’s likely you’ll argue to the bitter end. How do you feel after this. . .good? Do you ever walk away feeing better about yourself? My guess is no. You might have won the battle, but you will have likely lost the war.

The result is resentment and bitterness. Neither are great qualities to build relationships and influence others. The need to be right comes from ego. It is also an indication of low self-esteem. If you know you are right, does it help to bludgeon someone to prove it?

The idea of being right is the idea that someone else is wrong. The question I would have you consider is, “Is it better to be right or to be kind?” What’s the cost of being right?

Be humble enough to know when to walk away. Avoid attacking and becoming defensive. Preserving a relationship is more important. When you feel emotions welling up, it is time to walk away. Accept it for what it is, an impasse. Choose Love instead. Maintaining a healthy relationship is more important to personal happiness.

Follow Your Hunches with Dr. Jay LaGuardia

Have you ever experienced moments of inspiration, random thoughts, ideas or hunches? Neale Donald Walsch, calls these moments “Angel Talk,” which is a cool way of describing the messages from God or the Field of Intention. Whatever it is called, it doesn’t matter.

What matters is that we pay attention to theses messages. “Heaven talks in snippets, not in speeches.”

We all experience moments of inspiration, and it doesn’t even require us to be religious. The question is, are we paying attention? More importantly, are we acting on these messages?

When you find yourself being blessed with messages or hunches, stop, listen and act. These are blessing from above that should not be ignored. Be thankful for them. It means that you’re in tune with the infinite. There is no greater gift.

Dr. Jay LaGuardia on Brown Bags & White Boards

I recently came across this inspiring article about leadership. We know that leadership appears in many forms and styles, but perhaps no more important than at home.

Stony Brook College former AD, Jim Fiore, came up with a new idea: the brown bag approach.

Looking for new and innovative ways to inspire his family, he started writing quotes on his son lunch bag. He knows as a leader of young people, that the thoughts we fill our heads with have a big influence on our attitudes and behaviors.

Looking for ways to empower his son with strong and noble thoughts, the lunch bag quickly became the talk of the school. The lunch bag became so popular, that his friends couldn’t wait for lunch period; Not because of the food, but rather for the next empowering thought.

What can you do to empower your teams? What new and innovative ways can you come up with to lead your team to reach new heights? When people are inspired, they are more enthusiastic and hopeful about the future. They are more productive and better at problem solving. Collectively, they feel like there is nothing they can’t achieve.

Your team is looking to be inspired and led. They are waiting for a leader to show up with a vision for them and the practice.

Practice the 3 C’s: Creative, Consistent and Clear.

Character Does Matter

Have you ever considered how important character is to your success? Not just your character, but also the character of each member of your team? If you were to survey 1000 people, I believe that you would receive an overwhelming response that character matters.

I believe when we are building our team, too often we spend more time considering talent than character. Think about it, talent without character is like having a sexy sports car without gas. Consider exceptionally talented athletes or performers who have serious character flaws. They eventually destroy themselves and their careers. The list is almost endless.

This is why I would suggest that you consider the character of the people who you associate yourself with and the people you allow on your team.

A team built on strong character allows talent to reach its full potential. It will bring out the best in an organization and when adversity strikes (because it always will), you have the strengths to overcome and persevere. Character will drive the team to reach their full potential and it will bring out the best in others.

The most successful individuals and teams surround themselves with high character people. Plus, they are constantly growing their own character. Never stop striving to become a better version of yourself. It’s always higher character first, energy second, and talent third.
